Legacy Gifts
Legacy gifts are a powerful way to support The Haven’s mission and make a lasting difference in the lives of children, teens, and adults with disabilities. Two of the most common forms of legacy giving are Beneficiary Designation Gifts and Bequests. A Beneficiary Designation Gift allows you to name The Haven as a beneficiary of a retirement account, investment account, life insurance policy, or bank account—without changing your will. A Bequest, on the other hand, is a gift made through your will or trust that can include cash, property, or a percentage of your estate. Both options offer flexibility, may reduce the tax burden on your loved ones, and ensure your values live on through our programs and services for years to come.
Beneficiary Designation Gifts
Beneficiary designation gifts are simple and affordable ways to make a meaningful contribution to The Haven. You can name The Haven as a beneficiary of a retirement account, investment account, bank account, or life insurance policy.
Benefits of a beneficiary designation:
Support children, teens, and adults with disabilities
Continue to use your accounts as usual during your lifetime
Simplify your estate planning
Reduce tax burdens on your family
Receive an estate tax charitable deduction
How it works:
Contact your banker, broker, or insurance agent and request a beneficiary designation form
Complete, sign, and return the form
That’s it—your future gift is in place
This is one of the most flexible types of charitable gifts, allowing you to update or change your beneficiary designation at any time to reflect your evolving plans or needs.
Bequests
Bequests are one of the most impactful ways to make a legacy gift to The Haven. They allow you to leave a lasting legacy that reflects your values and helps improve the lives of people with disabilities long after your lifetime. A bequest is a gift made through your will or living trust, and it offers flexibility, simplicity, and potential tax advantages.
Benefits of making a bequest:
Support future generations of children, teens, and adults with disabilities
Maintain control of your assets during your lifetime
Update or revise your bequest at any time
Potentially reduce estate taxes for your heirs
Create a lasting legacy in your name or in honor of a loved one
Ways to make a bequest:
Gift a specific dollar amount (e.g., "$10,000 to The Haven")
Designate a percentage of your estate (e.g., "10% of my estate to The Haven")
Leave the residual balance of your estate after other gifts are distributed
Donate a specific asset, such as real estate, a vehicle, or valuable collectibles
Include contingent bequests, which are gifts made only if other beneficiaries predecease you
Sample language to include in your will or trust:
"I give and bequeath to The Haven, a nonprofit organization located in Sarasota, Florida, the sum of [dollar amount] (or [percentage] of my estate) to be used for its general purposes (or for a specific program or project if you wish to designate one)."
We encourage you to consult with your legal or financial advisor to choose the bequest option that best aligns with your goals. If you would like your gift to support a specific program, project, or service, please let us know—we are happy to honor your wishes.
